About This Spot

Walking into Moby Dick Seafood Restaurant is like stepping into a cherished local tradition, where the hum of friendly chatter mingles with the tempting scent of fried seafood. Situated just a short drive from the University of Louisville and Churchill Downs, this unpretentious spot offers a quietly familiar atmosphere that’s steady and welcoming—a place where the pace slows down just enough to savor simple, honest flavors.

The décor carries a well-worn charm, the kind of old-school character that hints at decades of neighborhood stories shared over crispy, golden onion rings or a heaping plate of clam strips. It's not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. There’s a comforting, almost nostalgic rhythm here, where the staff’s genuine warmth makes up for any rough edges, inviting visitors—whether longtime locals or curious newcomers—to feel right at home.

Mealtime at Moby Dick means more than just grabbing a bite; it’s a chance to revive a remembered favorite or create a new one. The menu is an ode to the satisfying simple things—comforting fried fish sandwiches, generous shrimp combos, and sides like fried green tomatoes that add their own twist to Southern seafood traditions. Portions are hearty, the kind that instantly feel like a genuine meal meant to fill both plate and soul.

Families, students, and workers alike find something familiar here—a steady reminder of community through food passed down and perfected in an inviting setting. Whether seated with friends or picking up a quick meal, there’s a shared understanding that this is a place where a good fish sandwich isn’t just food, but a small celebration of local spirit.

My favorite fish sandwich in Louisville. Great seafood from a Louisville institution. I’ve been going there as long as I can remember.

Not to far from University of Louisville campus, and just down the road from Churchill Downs so if you’re in the area it’s worth a try! Great fried seafood options! Breaded mushrooms were also very good. I gave it a 3 for Atmosphere because it’s Old school, little rundown, but has some character we didn’t mind! Workers were real nice!

I have a lot of nostalgia about this place. Grew up eating their fish sandwiches. Moved to Florida 16 years ago and still crave them. Had to have one before I left Louisville when I was passing through. Fries are better than they used to be but the fish is still yummy.

11-28-22 about 2:25pm: Inside still closed to dine in but able to come in and order. Wanted to try something not back home and had good reviews. I tried the shrimp and fish combo along with cheesesticks. Lady at the counter was helpful as I've never been here, being from Dallas and here for work. Shrimp was great. Fish was good. Fries were lukewarm so meh. Big hushpuppie was ok. Cheesesticks were ok. Sweet tea was great. I'd recommend the shrimp and a sweet tea personally.

It's been years since I could stop in and have some fish. But they still never disappoint. The atmosphere hasn't changed one bit and it's nostalgic and great for me. The service was great everyone nice and patient. The food was soo on poi t and amazing just like I had remembered maybe even better. It was my wife's first time and is now on the permanent list to visit. The food was fresh and hot and great.

I recently visited Moby Dick, and I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the experience was. The place has a casual, no-frills atmosphere that lets the food take center stage. I ordered the kabob platter with rice and a side of their cucumber yogurt, and everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. The meat was juicy and perfectly seasoned, and the rice was fluffy with just the right amount of saffron flavor. The portions were generous without being overwhelming, and the meal felt hearty but clean. Service was efficient and friendly, and the staff seemed genuinely invested in making sure everyone had what they needed. The only reason I’m holding back from a full five stars is that the dining area felt a little cramped during peak hours, and it could get a bit noisy. Still, the food more than made up for it. Moby Dick is a great spot when you’re in the mood for something flavorful and satisfying without breaking the bank.

Not fancy, but it was certainly very good! The staff was friendly and help steer me to the right menu items for a first timer. Looking forward to indulging in some great fried fish next time I am pass through town. And, oddly enough, the fried green tomatoes were outstanding!
